Sheopened a small1,400 sq. ft. store in Fuquay-Varina, NC.With the help of her daughter Shari, her sister Marthaandhusband Dave, this little store grew into a large 26,000 sq.ft.Super Thrift in 4 years! Assistance - Beacon of Hope operates asupportcenter for women and their children who are victims ofdomesticviolence and abuse. We have trained volunteers fieldingincomingcrisis calls and providing assistance with obtaining safehousing,victim advocacy, court advocacy, medical and dental care,and othernecessary services.Counseling - Beacon of Hope offers individual and groupcounselingwith a therapist at little or no cost. Counseling helpswomen gaincontrol of the issues they are facing - domesticviolence, problemswith relationships, sexual assault anddepression.Life Skills Training - Beacon of Hope has instituted a LifeSkillsTraining Initiative offering instruction with computers,typing,resume writing, dressing for success, mock interviews,financialbudgeting and assistance with job placement.Pet Safety - Beacon of Hope is committed to supporting the needsofwomen and children who have been affected by violence. TheFosterPet Program consists of volunteer host families who agreetotemporarily house pets while the woman victim is getting thehelpshe needs. This is a major barrier for many victims that needtoleave their violent situation.Teen Talk Outreach - Beacon of Hope is committed to supportingtheneeds of teens through outreach and education. The concept for Special Olympics was borninthe early 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day campforpeople with intellectual disabilities at her home inRockville,Maryland. Her vision quickly gained recognition andmomentum, andin 1968 the first International Special Olympics Gameswere held atSoldier Field, Chicago, bringing together over 1,000athletes withintellectual disabilities from 26 states andCanada.Since then, Mrs. Shriver's vision has grown into one of thelargestand most successful sports and volunteer organizations intheworld. World Computer Exchange (WCE) is a 15-yearoldnon-profit organization incorporated in the United StatesandCanada that provides the following 6 services: capacitybuilding,low-cost computers, content development, training trips,computersfor girls and local e-waste solutions. WCE’s services areenhancedby 25 global educational Strategic Allies. WCE’s 800volunteersassist 900 Partner organizations in 81 developingcountries inAfrica, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Since2000, 4.3million youth in 3,150 computer labs located inschools,universities, youth centers and libraries were able toaccess newskills, understanding and opportunities via the interneton WCErefurbished computers while these computers were kept outoflandfills and recycled appropriately.Our Mission: To reduce the digital divide for youth indevelopingcountries; to use our global network of partnerships toenhancecommunities in these countries; and to promote the reuseofelectronic equipment and its ultimate disposal inanenvironmentally responsible manner.The idea for WCE came in 1999 when Timothy Anderson was amid-careerstudent at Harvard University’s Kennedy School ofGovernment. Whilethere he learned that from 1999 to 2005 over 250million computerswould become obsolete in the U.S. - a staggeringnumber. At the sametime he was hearing from his fellow classmatesfrom developingcountries that their homelands, especially schools,wanted toconnect their youth to the Internet. The idea ofrepurposing usedcomputers was fairly obvious. The FOD (Fatty Oxidation Disorders)FamilySupport Group™ was 'born' in 1991 as a way of dealing withthesudden death of our 21-month old daughter, Kristen, in 1985fromundiagnosed MCAD. Initially, she was 'diagnosed' withReye'sSyndrome and it was not until one year later, when our sonKevinwas born and diagnosed with MCAD that we discovered Kristenalsohad this rare metabolic disorder. Our third child Brian, isacarrier of MCAD and not directly affected. To say the least,ourfamily has been changed forever by this genetic disorder.Our mission is clear...to connect and network with FOD FamiliesandProfessionals around the world and to provide emotional andgriefsupport, Family Stories, practical information about livingwiththese disorders, and Medical Updates to inform families ofnewdevelopments in screening, diagnosis, research and treatment.Inearly 2010 we expanded our Mission and grief support toincludeface-to-face support for any bereaved parent/families in theEastLansing, MI area, not just those dealing with ourdisorders.Awareness of these disorders is imperative for early diagnosisandtreatment, prompting us to be strongly committed topromotingexpanded ~ universal and comprehensive ~ newborn screeningfor FODs(and several other metabolic disorders).
